Insight into University is a comprehensive experience delivered both virtually and through summer residential programmes. Students can explore STEM subjects at university and the career opportunities that these subjects lead to.

Students will get the opportunity to experience university style lectures and work on activities and group projects with the support of academics and student mentors. Students will stay in halls of residence and will take part in social activities in the evenings, so they get the full university experience.

At the end of the scheme, students graduate as Silver-level Industrial Cadets, a nationally recognised award that students can use as evidence of their experience and take forward to complement their future applications and career journeys.

Course information:
Age group - Year 12 / S5-S6.
Structure - 4-5 day residential summer school at a university to explore a specific STEM subject.
Class / Individual / Team? - Individual places.
Who applies – Student.
Teacher involvement - No teacher involvement required.
Cost - £475 for 3 nights residential and £595 for 4 nights residential. Bursary places are available for eligible students.

Industrial Cadets: Silver Virtual Insight into University

Insight into University is a comprehensive virtual experience allowing students to explore STEM studies at university and the career opportunities that these subjects lead to. It provides access to information on student life, STEM projects and activities set by leading UK universities and global STEM companies, first year undergraduate lectures, live interactive sessions with academics, admissions tutors, employers and current students.

Course information:
Age group - Year 11-13 / S5-S6.
Structure - 30 hours of study to complete flexibly over 8weeks in the summer. Get an insight into STEM studies at university and thecareers they lead to.
Class / Individual / Team - Individual places.
Who applies – Student.
Teacher involvement - No teacher involvement required.

EDT STEM Silver Programme

Industrial Cadets: Silver Insight into Apprenticeships

Insight into Apprenticeships is a 6-monthhybrid extra-curricular course that has been fully-funded to inspire and inform students about the apprenticeship route to a career in STEM. This programme will provide an opportunity for young people in the Scottish Highlands, Herefordshire, Birmingham and Coventry to connect with local industry and understand the value & benefits of an apprenticeship, whilst supporting them to prepare and make informed career choices. 

At the end of the scheme, students graduate as Silver-level Industrial Cadets, a nationally recognised award that students can use as evidence of their experience and take forward to complement their future applications and career journeys.

Course information:
Age group – 15-18 years (Year 10 - 12 / S4 - 6).
Structure - Running across 6 months this hybrid course will require 30 hours of work, completing online and in-person STEM & careers activities and attending interactive live sessions.

EDT STEM Gold Programme

Industrial Cadets: Gold Mentored Project

Gold Mentored Projects allows students the opportunity to collaborate in a small group (up to 6 students) on a real-world STEM project set by their sponsoring company. Throughout the process, the programme structure and their mentor will help them develop essential work-ready and technical skills, while introducing them to career pathways in industry, including apprenticeship and graduate opportunities.

Upon completing the programme and 50hours of work, students will graduate as Gold-level Industrial Cadets, earning a nationally recognized award that can enhance their future applications and career prospects.

Course information:
Age group - Year 12 / S5-S6.
Structure - 20 weeks / 50 hours in school project supported by an industry mentor.
Class/ Individual/Team - Team project.
Who applies - School representative e.g. teacher, STEM co-ordinator, careers advisor.
Teacher involvement - Teacher required to support the team in a weekly meeting.
Cost - Administration cost (bursaries/sponsorship may be available).
