Industrial Cadets Gold Project Celebrates 40 Years

Launched in 1984, Industrial Cadets Gold Mentored Projects, provides the opportunity for young people to connect directly with industry.

During the programme, students gain insight into the world of work through 50 hours of project-based work experience, tackling real sector problems, while being mentored by industry professionals. The scheme is for Year 12 and S5/6 students.

The well-established programme, which was formerly know as the Engineering Education Scheme, allows companies to play an integral role in shaping the future workforce, instilling the technical and employability skills required by the sector, while identifying potential Apprentices or Graduates to support the early talent pipeline.

Through building experience of work at a deeper level, companies develop stronger connections with students, schools and colleges, creating a presence amongst their local communities, while supporting their long-term future growth.

Partner – BAE Systems

Ian Hoare CEng, MIET, MIMechE, Engineering Manager at Electronic Systems, part of BAE Systems, explained:

“The Gold Industrial Cadet Project is a great way to inspire young people to consider a career in engineering. It provides an opportunity to work as a team, developing and testing a product to solve a problem that is presented to them. It’s a great opportunity for BAE Systems to introduce our company to these students in the hope that they will consider applying for one of the many Early Career schemes that we offer, including Apprenticeships, Graduate and Under-graduate programmes.”

Student

"An immense pleasure to have such a useful and exciting opportunity which has allowed me to build many new skills within engineering. This experience will remain valuable throughout my life, particularly if I delve into engineering which I am hoping to do after leaving sixth form. Without this opportunity, I may have been unsure if engineering was the right career path for me to follow."
